14-year-old Polish model Monika Jagaciak was banned from the catwalk at Australian Fashion Week amid continuing controversy over the sexualisation of young girls in the fashion industry.

A photo-shoot of Monika Jagaciak by Australian Vogue was also called off after the editor said she had not realised the Polish teenager’s age.

Organisers of Australian Fashion Week in Sydney banned all under-16s from the catwalk after furious public debate over the use of youngsters in an industry already under fire over anorexia and drug use.

It follows a similar decision ahead of London Fashion Week last September and brings the Australian event into line with shows in other leading cities. [Daily Mail]

After the jump, view a few more pictures of the young model in the May 2008 issue of Jalouse magazine.

  5. i think she is beautiful and it doesnt matter how skinny or young she is..some ppl are just naturally thin because of their metabolism..and her age..since when do people care?..shes making history!!

  6. I’m polish girl like her, and I have 13 years old. I think that she is beautiful, but she is too young for big fashion world.

  8. Excellent Modelling Photos of Monika here!

I think the Australian case of Monika was blown out of all proportion at the time, certainly yes there have been issues regarding Top Fashion Runway Modelling in the past, but those very issues were were initially caused by the top designers and top glossies of the time encouraging unrealistic sizes and looks, since then we have seen a complete reversal in their attitudes to the extent where they ban young aspiring models.

If a young person wishes to Model Top Fashion and is guided by Adult/Guardian suitably then should we stop them? Are the pressures any different from wishing to be a Top Gymnast or suchlike? If the Top Fashion scene is so unsuitable and risky for youngster then surely they should clean up their act rather than totally ban youngsters?

Over the past years Camila Finn became a Top model for Ford Brazil at age 13, Daniela Cott had a true life ‘Rags to Riches’ story at age 14 and many others have gone on to Model and become well adjusted young people, so why are the likes of Maddison Gabriel and Monika Jagaciak singled out? I note in both cases it happened in Australia and now Australia are reporting on a 12yo just because she won a Teen Magazine Model competition OMG!
